Description
These bottles contain processed palm oil from Kyerekwanso. They were made by Jemima Asogli in the Central Region. Jemima is the daughter of a fishmonger and a cobbler. She is a 15-year-old girl who stopped going to school because of her mother’s illness. She came across bottling palm oil when she was walking along a plantation a year ago. She continued to go there every day with the hopes of finding work to do. The oil palm plantation owner took notice of her and allowed her to assist in carrying the fruits to the mills. This is where she learnt about palm oil and how it is processed.
As time went by, she learnt how to bottle the oil and started carrying them to sell in markets and small community gatherings. She continued this practise and extended her market to neighbouring communities in the area. Walking for extended periods of time she ended her day spent and back on the plantation where it all started. There she slept in one of the storage silos till daybreak where she started her journey carrying fruits and taking some of the oil to bottle and sell. On market days she made some amount of money which took care of her mother’s medication while some days she didnt even have enough to buy food. In all this, she did not give up and continued to double her efforts, reaching farther markets and communities.
The efforts made by Jemima cannot be allowed to go to waste. All proceeds for the bottles of processed palm oil will provide Jemima with some money to go back to school and take care of her mother.
