Description
This basket was woven by Faustina Adama in Zabzugu. She is a young lady of 19 years old. She lives alone on the outskirt of the village and sells her baskets to survive.
Faustina started off as a young promising dancer in her village where she was hired for tourists and other recreational activities in the area. As time went on, she was laid off bc of the tough economic situations caused by COVID-19. Regardless of this, she set out to earn a living where she stumbled on an old woman in the next village. She learnt how the woman crafted her baskets and later started weaving baskets of her own. This sparked the interest of basket weaving and encouraged her to start her own venture. She goes from town-to-town advertising her baskets and with some luck can sell some to market women and fishermen in the communities she visits.
With no place to sleep, she finds a place for herself under a tree to sleep for the night and the following day continues her journey. With no family to call her own due to her decision not to marry at the age of 17 to the community ritualist. She was expelled from her home village and has been on her own ever since.
Taimako was moved by the touching story of Faustina and resolved to help her anyway possible. Her baskets provide a means for her to survive and an advertising opportunity for young women facing similar challenges. We are besieging to you to purchase a woven basket to support the little venture of Faustina.
